Juventus Under-19 coach Paolo Montero will take charge of the senior team for the final two matches of the season after Massimiliano Allegri was fired last week.
The 52-year-old Montero, who played for the Bianconeri, has never coached a Serie A team but Juventus announced on Sunday that he would make the step up for the final two league matches.
Montero will take charge of his first training session on Sunday before the team plays at Bologna the following day. Juventus ends the season at home to Monza next weekend.
Allegri was fired on Friday for his ugly outburst toward the referees in last week’s Italian Cup final. The coach was also reportedly aggressive toward journalists after the match and Juventus said his behavior was not in line with its “values.”
Juventus is fourth in Serie A and has already qualified for next season’s Champions League but before Wednesday’s Italian Cup victory it hadn’t won any of its previous six matches and there was speculation that Allegri’s contract –which was set to expire at the end of next season – would be ended a year early.
Montero, a former defender, played nearly 300 matches for Juventus between 1996 and 2005 and has coached the Under-19 team for the past two years.
And unlike the last time they played somewhere other than Allianz Stadium there will be somebody other than Max Allegri calling the shots on the sidelines. And there’s the added bonus that Paolo Montero will be making his managerial debut against the man who is widely expected to be named Juventus’ next manager a few weeks from now.
Just your regular game with not much riding on it between third place and fourth place, right? Let’s hope seeing as both teams have already clinched their spot in the Champions League for next season and all that. So let’s just hope things go a little bit better than most of Juventus’ league fixtures over the last 3 1⁄2 months. That sure would be nice.
With two games left to play in the Serie A season, Bologna and Juventus are equal on 67 points apiece, but the hosts are three goals ahead on goal difference.
The visitors secured Champions League football for the first time in 60 years after defeating Napoli 2-0, while Juve were forced to settle for a draw with Salernitana, but still managed to confirm a Champions League spot.
A trio of injured Bologna players will sit out Monday's clash, including Manchester United and Arsenal-linked forward Joshua Zirkzee, who played 73 minutes against Napoli but is currently nursing a hamstring issue. He will likely be replaced by Jens Odegaard in the starting XI.
Juventus are pretty well-stocked at the moment. Only veteran full-back Mattia De Sciglio (muscle) is expected to miss out through injury, while Paul Pogba's doping suspension will most likely result in a split this summer.
