Here is everything you need to know for the 2024 IIHF World Championship. IIHF World Championship schedule, results 2024. Friday, May 10.
The focus in the hockey world in North America may be on the Stanley Cup playoffs, but on the global scale, all eyes are on the 2024 IIHF World Championship.
The men's international hockey tournament is set to take place for a week and a half in Czechia this year, as 16 countries battle for the right to be crowned world champion.
Canada enters the 2024 competition as the defending gold medalists. The Canadians defeated Germany in the 2023 gold medal game, taking home their second title in a span of three years and their 28th overall, breaking a tie with Russia/Soviet Union for the most at the Worlds.
Plenty of NHL talent is going to be on display at the event. NHL teams that did not make the postseason are sending over some of their best players for one final competition before the summer.

IIHF World Championship standings 2024
There are 16 countries competing at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. The group is split up into two pools of eight. Teams will play seven preliminary games in a round-robin format within their group, followed by a three-round playoff.
In the group stage, teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime loss and no points for a regulation loss.
The top four teams from each pool advance to the quarterfinals. The winners of quarterfinal games advance to the semis, while the losers will play in a 5th-place game for seeding purposes. The victors of the semifinals will face off in the gold medal game, and the semis losers will play for bronze.
A third of the way through the IIHF World Championship group phase, and Switzerland and Sweden are looking like the teams to beat. However, Group A in particular won't heat up for a few days yet, with powerhouses Switzerland, Finland and reigning champions Canada set to face off in quick succession.
They may have endured a nightmare tournament on home ice 12 months ago, but all early signs suggest that No.2-ranked Finland have dusted themselves off in in Prague and Ostrava, and mean business.
The Lions, who have won two of the past four tournaments – the others being snapped up by Team Canada – skidded to a seventh-place finish last time out, and therefore will be doubly determined to give their outgoing legendary head coach Jukka Jalonen the send-off his trophy-studded reign warrants.
With Russia excluded, USA are out to show that they're, at the very least, the best of the rest, despite finishing behind both Germany and Latvia this time last year. However, they've lost two of their opening three games, and can't afford too many more slip-ups.
Here's everything you need to know to watch IIHF World Championship 2024 online, including TV channels and live stream information, with or without cable.
The 2024 IIHF World Championship is being live streamed for free on ORF in Austria, on ProSieben in Germany, and on YouTube in countries where it hasn't been picked up by a big-name broadcaster, such as Australia.
But what if you're based there but aren't at home to catch that free IIHF World Championship coverage? Maybe you're on holiday and don't want to spend money on pay TV in another country, when you'd usually be able to watch the event for free at home?
Don't worry — you can watch it via a VPN instead. We'll show you how to do that below.
Ice Hockey World Championship is an annual international men's ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
Today’s format of the World Championship features 16 teams in the championship group, 12 teams in Division I and 12 teams in Division II. If there are more than 40 teams, the rest compete in Division III. The teams in the championship play a preliminary round, then the top eight teams play in the playoff medal round, and the winning team is crowned World Champion.
The most successful team in the history of 16 teams is Canada with 28 titles.
The current title holder is Canada.
World Championship next match is Czech Republic v Denmark.
Sofascore provides you with IIHF World Championship scores, standings, groups, schedule and also ice hockey live scores. Besides that, you can check the top players for each season.
In the U.S., the 2024 IIHF World Championship is split between NHL Network and ESPN Plus.
While an ESPN Plus subscription doesn't grant access to regular ESPN content, it will let you stream thousands of live events, original shows and series that can't be found anywhere else. ESPN+ is available for $10.99 a month or $109.99 a year.
Even better, ESPN Plus is available in a bundle with both Hulu and Disney Plus for $24.99 a month. That gets you all of the ESPN Plus events, top Hulu shows like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", as well as the Disney Star Wars and Marvel libraries.
If you've already cut the cord and don't have a cable package, you can get NHL Network through an OTT cable TV alternative.
One of the best value options is Sling TV. Prices start from $40/month and your first month half-price. You'll just need to add its Sports Extra add-on for an additional $11/month to include NHL Network.
