The Vancouver Canucks have received a major blow to their Game 7 hopes when they face the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.
According to multiple reports, leading scorer Brock Boeser will miss the game and more because of a blood clot in his leg. He has a team-high seven goals and is tied for the team lead with 12 points in 12 games.
"He's scored some big goals for us, so it's a tough one," said Canucks coach Rick Tocchet, who didn't disclose the reason Boeser will be absent. "But next man up. That's the way you got to approach it, like we have all year."
The Game 7 winner will earn a trip to the Western Conference final and a meeting with the Dallas Stars. That series will start on Thursday in Dallas.
The winning team will also continue a bid to become the first Canadian team to win a Stanley Cup title since 1993.
Their stars had big performances in Game 6. Connor McDavid had three assists after getting one point in the previous three games. Zach Hyman scored to end a three-game drought. Leon Draisaitl had two assists and has at least a point in all 11 playoff games. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Evan Bouchard each had three-point games.
Boeser's absence will be tough for the Canucks to overcome. Canucks forward Elias Lindholm has five goals and there are a couple four-goal scorers, but Boeser is the go-to scorer. Star Elias Pettersson has only one goal in the playoffs. Vancouver is 0-for-11 on the power play in the last three games.
They have overcome adversity before: Don't forget that Vezina Trophy finalist Thatcher Demko has played only one game in the playoffs.
Goalie Arturs Silovs: He, like Skinner, has never played in a Game 7. But he faced that pressure before, helping Latvia win bronze at the 2023 world championships., the country's first medal. He was named MVP of that tournament.
They're the home team. They can get the matchups they want with the last line change. The Stars and Bruins won the 2024 playoffs' previous two Game 7s as the home team.
The two Canadian teams last played each other on Saturday, when the Oilers pulled out a whopping 5-1 win, thereby tying up the round and sending the teams to Game 7. The Oilers were in a similar position last year when they were eliminated from the Playoffs in Game 7 of Round 2 against the Vegas Golden Knights. The Canucks, on the other hand, didn't even make it to the Playoffs last year, so they've already exceeded expectations for the 2023-2024 season.
Edmonton is looking to redeem themselves after losing in the second round last season to Las Vegas in six games. Vancouver, on the other hand, hasn’t advanced to the conference finals since 2011, eventually losing to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals in seven games.
Tonight’s game 7 winner will advance to play against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Finals, and they will be one series away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final. Since both teams are facing elimination, fans can expect to see a highly intense and competitive game this evening.
The Oilers were facing elimination during game 6 on Saturday, but they were able to dominate that home game and win 5-1 to force game 7. During that imperative win, the Oilers were tied 1-1 heading into the second period. However, they scored four straight goals in the final 40 minutes to solidify their victory.
