With seven of eight quarter-final slots sewn up, all eyes are on Slovakia and Latvia at the IIHF World Championship today. With 12 points – three more than Latvia – that final golden ticket is technically Slovakia's to lose, but they're up against formidable opponents in Sweden, the only team with a perfect record.
Latvia, on the other hand, will take on USA, who are assured of a place in the playoff round, but have been beaten twice. However, Harijs Vītolins' men don't just need to win. The only way they can leapfrog Slovakia is if they beat USA in regulation and Sweden win in regulation. No other combination of results would cut it.
It's a welcome note of jeopardy after Austria's quarter-final hopes were ended by Great Britain. The Eagles lit up the tournament with their gung-ho approach, their games producing 50 goals, and they'll be missed.
Group winners Sweden and Canada are looking like the teams to beat, though Germany and the Czech Republic look strong too. After enduring a nightmare on home ice 12 months ago, No.2-ranked Finland mean business too.

The 2024 IIHF World Championship is being live streamed for free on ORF in Austria, on ProSieben in Germany, and on YouTube in countries where it hasn't been picked up by a big-name broadcaster, such as Australia.
But what if you're based there but aren't at home to catch that free IIHF World Championship coverage? Maybe you're on holiday and don't want to spend money on pay TV in another country, when you'd usually be able to watch the event for free at home?
The focus in the hockey world in North America may be on the Stanley Cup playoffs, but on the global scale, all eyes are on the 2024 IIHF World Championship.
The men's international hockey tournament is set to take place for a week and a half in Czechia this year, as 16 countries battle for the right to be crowned world champion.
Canada enters the 2024 competition as the defending gold medalists. The Canadians defeated Germany in the 2023 gold medal game, taking home their second title in a span of three years and their 28th overall, breaking a tie with Russia/Soviet Union for the most at the Worlds.
Plenty of NHL talent is going to be on display at the event. NHL teams that did not make the postseason are sending over some of their best players for one final competition before the summer.
